Microblading? I'm Scared!

Want to get microblading but feeling anxious, nervous, and/or stressed? Or is it your first time getting a tattoo and you just don’t know what to expect?

I’m all about not sugar coating things. Microblading is a face tattoo. Understandably, many of my clients are hesitant to confirm the procedure, and then anxious, nervous, and/or stressed when the big day finally arrives.

I find that when you have all of the information and the fear of the unknown is removed, it’s much easier to feel comfortable. With that being said, here’s a quick rundown of how my clients move through the microblading process with me start to finish.

BEFORE:

First we have a phone or video consultation. I look at the brows (either by photo or video) to ensure that the skin and brows will be a good fit for microblading. I discuss the individual’s needs and we determine their candidacy. (There is also a list of factors that would make someone an unsuitable candidate, which can be found here on my website.)

Microblading is an excellent way to fix asymmetry, cover scars, add fullness, change the brow shape, and add colour to the natural eyebrows.

There is some minor preparation needed before microblading (the full details can be found here on my website). Some medications should be restricted, and caffeine should be avoided for 24 hours before the appointment.

DURING:

On the big day, we start the session with a quick chat. I reconfirm the client’s desires/needs, and discuss any questions they may have. I then measure the individual’s face using tools and a symmetry app, and draw a brow outline based on the client’s bone structure and where their hair naturally grows.

While there are absolutely certain brow shape “rules”, ultimately all of the decisions come down to personal preference. My clients are the ones that look at themselves every day, and their thoughts are extremely important to me. Sometimes people would prefer that their brows are thicker, have more of an arch, or are longer than what I’ve drawn on, so we make tweaks until the client is completely satisfied.

We determine the brow colour based on the colour of the hair and brow hair, and on skin tone. Again, lots of options and ultimately the client has full decision making rights.

The client gives the “OK” at multiple points before the microblading process starts.

Microblading involves the use of a handheld manual tool that implants pigment into the skin as I draw on hair-like strokes. There is no tattoo machine (which means no vibrations or machine noise). The first time going through both brows has to be on bare skin, which can be slightly uncomfortable. Most clients rate it a 2.5/10 on a discomfort scale. After the first pass, I can apply a numbing gel which makes the rest of the procedure a breeze. Many of my clients fall asleep.

In total, the first appointment usually takes about 3 hours (45 minutes for talking and measuring, up to 2 hours for application, and a few minutes to discuss aftercare).

AFTER:

The numbing gel I use includes Epinephrine, which cuts down on redness and swelling. Most clients look like an enhanced version of themselves when they leave the studio. There are no bandages, and no major redness and/or swelling. Brows will go through healing stages, including a couple of days of looking slightly dark, but nothing will look unnatural or obvious. Light aftercare is required.

To ensure an excellent final result, a perfecting session is required 6-8 weeks later. This touch-up involves the same general process as the first session, minus the initial chatting and measuring, and takes less than 2 hours.

MISCE-FRICKIN-LANEOUS:

It is also important to note that I am a certified, licensed, insured, and Ottawa Public Health inspected microblading artist. Many artists are not, so do your research and ensure you feel comfortable with your artist! (Seriously though. It’s a tattoo. Just Google “microblading fails” and you’ll have sad content for hours…)

If done correctly (please re-read paragraph above haha), microblading will not be permanent, will not affect your natural brow hair growth, will not fade to the awkward red/blue/purple/grey brow colours we’ve all witnessed, or leave scar tissue.

Please please please don’t hesitate to ask me anything! There is no such thing as a stupid question!
